The father of a student and an Islamist “launched a fatwa” or religious decree against French professor Samuel Paty, who was beheaded on October 16 after showing Muhammad cartoons in class on freedom of opinion.
“They clearly launched a fatwa against the professor,” said French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, interviewed by Europe 1 radio. The fatwa is an order issued by an Islamist authority, usually a mufti. The student’s father and the Islamist militant Abdelhakim Sefrioui are part of the 11 detainees after this attack, perpetrated on Friday by an 18-year-old Chechen.

Since the murder of Professor Samuel Paty on Friday, several people have been arrested and some 80 investigations have been opened on suspicion of having committed a hate crime on social networks, affirmed the person in charge.

From this morning, there are and will be police operations. They are many and affect dozens of individuals, “he said.
In addition, he announced that the State services will make “visits” to associations linked to Islamic fundamentalism and that the Council of Ministers will decide the dissolution of some, at the request of the president, Emmanuel Macron. He specifically cited the Committee Against Islamophobia (CCI), an organization that has been in the sights of the authorities for a long time, but noted that there are “hundreds” of associations under the magnifying glass of Justice.
Darmanin orders expulsion of 231 Islamists
In addition, the minister had already announced that he had instructed the prefects (departmental police chiefs) to proceed with the expulsion of 231 foreigners residing illegally in the country and who are registered for their Islamist radicalization. Of these, 180 are currently incarcerated.
This police operation was announced a few hours after a meeting of the National Defense Council, headed by Macron, concluded on Sunday night, and in which measures on several fronts were studied to intensify the fight against Islamist terrorism.
The meeting outlined a plan that is expected to be presented in the coming days. One of its main points is to closely monitor individuals and associations that promote radical Islamist views, with more determined actions by the authorities. The control of Islamist messages on social networks will also be strengthened, with more means to monitor and act against their authors.
Another point includes reinforcing surveillance and security in educational centers and protecting teachers when problems related to radicalism arise. In this sense, the Government spokesman, Gabriel Attal, denounced on Sunday in a television interview “The public lynching” that Paty suffered before his assassination and asked for “an absolutely exemplary response” against his authors.

The father of a student at the institute where Paty taught and a well-known Islamist activist released several videos on social networks against the teacher days before the murder, in which they disclosed detailed personal information about him.
One video even had the alleged testimony of a student who, in reality, never attended the class in which the Muhammad cartoons were shown. Those two men “They launched a fatwa against the teacher”, Darmanin denounced.
Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in France on Sunday in honor of the beheaded professor, an attack that has shocked the country, the scene of several jihadist attacks since 2015 that have resulted in the death of more than 250 people.
