Hundreds of protesters took over the Guatemalan Congress this Saturday and set fire to several of its windows, as Efe found.
The protesters, mostly hooded, broke the entrance door to Parliament and also the windows, throwing fire torches inside, without the presence of the deputies inside the facilities.
The takeover of Congress is carried out within the framework of a massive call this Saturday to demonstrate against the government of the president, Alejandro Giammattei, after the approval last Wednesday of the budget for 2021, with cuts to social programs in the midst of a critical situation, such as high rates of child malnutrition.
At the moment, no data has been released on the injuries or deaths within the Congress, located in the center of Guatemala City.
Eviction and action of Firefighters
The protesters were evicted as the minutes passed by the launching of tear gas by the National Civil Police, forcing them to disperse and evacuating the street.
The fire brigades arrived at the scene to put out the fire, without the damage being known at the time.
In parallel, while hundreds of protesters took over Congress, thousands of other Guatemalans were peacefully demonstrating against Giammattei just one kilometer away from the government headquarters, the National Palace of Culture.
The Guatemalan president reacted to the demonstrations through a message on his social networks, in which he indicated that “You have the right to demonstrate according to the law” but “we cannot allow you to vandalize with public or private property.”
