The Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal investigation into the case of people who had obtained the middle class bonus in an irregular manner, after the Internal Revenue Service (SII) revealed that 437,703 had lied about their income in July 2020.
According to the newspaper La Tercera, the national prosecutor, Jorge Abbott, sent an official letter at the beginning of October to the SII requesting the list of people who had entered their data incorrectly.
Abbott appointed the Los Lagos regional prosecutor, Carmen Gloria Wittwer, to take the case, for which she will define what crime will be charged to those involved, which could be subsidy fraud, perjury, among other illicit, daily La Tercera .
Since it was known that almost 500 thousand people obtained the bonus irregularly, the SII has reported that some people have reported themselves and started the process of returning the amounts, while others have asked for a reconsideration of their remuneration data.
In addition, the Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, reported this Thursday that they will open an investigation against the 37,000 public officials who obtained the bonus for the middle class, without meeting the requirements.
The Internal Revenue Service gave a deadline until November 30 for the beneficiaries who did not comply with the requirements to return the funds, or present records that allow their situation to be regularized.
