The Education Commission of the Chamber of Deputies dispatched to the Chamber the project that suspends payment of tariffs in higher education institutions.
The discussion in particular of the initiative that also momentarily curbs the tuition fees of the study houses, in the period of the State of Catastrophe due to the pandemic, began this Tuesday and its processing ended on Wednesday in the respective commission.
Several modifications were made and some indications were left out as they were considered unconstitutional. Among the relevant that was approved is that universities they should draw up a plan of support measures to students where there is an impairment in the financial situation. Collection of interest or fines is prevented, as well as sanctions and conditions to provide benefits to students.
The initiative establishes as a right of the students benefited with the suspension, that the amount owed for fees and tuition is prorated in at least 24 equal and monthly installments, which may not generate interest or penalties for late payment.
In addition, the Ministry of Education must open a new application period for student benefits during the second semester, for those who prove a reduction in their family income. This despite the Rejection expressed by the Undersecretary of Education in the session, Juan Eduardo Vargas.

Progress was also made in that students with economic problems associated with the pandemic may request the suspension of the academic year, with the exemption of additional charges in relation to the semester academic progress.
At the end of the session, the Government requested the constitutional reservation of most of the indications dispatched, in the voice of the head of the Legal Department of the Undersecretariat of Education, María Fernanda Bradie, which was questioned by the Socialist deputy, Juan Santana, one of the authors of the initiative.
