They are the two contests where most of the opposition’s glances will be placed. The primaries to know, on the one hand, the letter of the Broad Front and, on the other, that of the Constituent Unit, in view of the final elections of the metropolitan regional governor in April.
Thus, this Sunday the former ministers will be measured from a sidewalk Helia Molina (PPD), Claudio Orrego (DC) and Álvaro Erazo (PS) to know who will represent the nascent Constituent Unit pact. On the other hand, they will be contesting a quota Karina Oliva (Comunes), María José Cumplido (PL) and Sebastián Depolo (RD).
However, regardless of who wins each of these contests, this election has been seen as a measure of the forces between the two blocks. In this way, a dispute has been put on the table about the specific weight of each conglomerate in the center-left, to the extent of which sector will be able to summon more people to participate in their respective competitions.
From the Constituent Unit they are confident that their election will generate more interest from the voters. From that bloc they assure that their letters are better known and that also the number of militants of the parties that make up their pact (PS-PPD-PR-DC-Ciudadanos-PRO) will make them obtain a greater participation than that of the Broad Front.
Meanwhile, from the FA, although they agree that more people should participate in the constituent unit primaries, they bet that the difference between the number of voters in the elections of both coalitions is not so wide. Likewise, they assure that this is only a first stage and that the April elections and the probable second round are still missing, so there is still a lot of room to grow.
However, a debate has also begun regarding whether the difference between the participation of the primary of one block over that of the other is very wide, the candidate who prevails in the most massive one becomes the only card of these two alliances for the April elections.
It should be noted that in addition, in the opposition, the Communist Party has already stated that it will present a competitive candidate for the April elections, and in the Humanist Party, they have already made the candidacy of Pablo Maltés official, the partner of Congresswoman Pamela Jiles.
In the Broad Front and in the Constituent Unit they agree that their bets in Valparaíso will have a symbolic weight for both blocks. The primary of Region V, where the two pacts of the center-left will compete separately, will be one of the main opposition contests this Sunday.
On the one hand, the Constituent Unit will face the candidate of the PS and the PPD, the former rector of the University of Valparaíso, Aldo valley, against the letter of the DC, the regional councilor, Cristian Mella. In the Broad Front, meanwhile, three candidates will be measured: Rodrigo Mundaca, supported by RD; Nataly Campusano, Social Convergence, and Juan Carlos Garcia, of the Liberal Party.
In this last block, they see that this competition will measure its true electoral weight in one of the areas that they consider to be a “cradle of the Frenteamplismo.” In that sense, they believe that in Valparaíso they have a better chance of succeeding in terms of the number of voters compared to the Constituent Unit.
For their part, from that pact they transmit that this region is relevant for the PS and the PPD due to the “experiment” that a joint candidacy means. Likewise, in DC they recognize the demographic importance of the area for the great commitment of the community: that the party wins the majority of the 16 primaries of its block.
One of the main disputes that will be settled on Sunday is the battle of the center-right for Vitacura, where three candidates aspire to become the definitive representative of the sector to fight for the mayoralty of that commune, which has been led since 1996 by Raúl Torrealba (RN ), who announced several months ago that he would not go for another term and that, in any case, he would be prevented by the new law that limits reelection.
On September 30, the three participants of the official primaries were registered: the former Minister of Labor Camila Merino (Evópoli), the former mayor of Santiago and La Florida Pablo Zalaquett (UDI), and the current councilor of Vitacura Maximiliano del Real (RN).
All of them have disputed, at the same time, different supports of figures from the center-right in recent days. This, in an area considered the electoral bastion of that bloc. Thus, for example, Torrealba supported Del Real, who also received support videos, among others, from the former mayor of Las Condes Francisco de la Maza and Magdalena Piñera, daughter of President Sebastián Piñera; while the mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei, recorded a video highlighting the figure of Merino; and Zalaquett had a field activity on Wednesday in which he was accompanied by the mayor of Las Condes and one of the main presidential figures of Chile Vamos, Joaquín Lavín.
Cristobal Lira, The current UDI mayor of Lo Barnechea, was appointed to the post after Felipe Guevara (RN) left that position – which he held for 11 years – to take over as mayor of the Metropolitan Region. And now Lira seeks to remain as communal chief for the next four years.
However, he will have to face in a primary with the letter promoted by National Renovation, the executive director of the Libertad Institute, Consuelo Alvial.
In the days leading up to primary school, in addition, a struggle has been unleashed that has escalated between Lira and Guevara: the former accuses interventionism on the part of the Mayor of the Metropolitan Region in favor of Alvial, a fact that would go against the instruction given by President Sebastián Piñera that ministers, undersecretaries, mayors and governors refrain from actively participating in the campaign. This, in order not to deepen the differences and avoid conflicts within Chile Vamos.
However, the regional chief and his entourage have denied these complaints. All this, in a context in which the RN candidate worked directly with Guevara at the command of the Community Development Directorate of the Municipality of Lo Barnechea.
