Argentine President Alberto Fernández promulgated this Thursday the law of voluntary interruption of pregnancy, approved in a historic parliamentary debate on December 30.

The law allows access to an abortion up to the 14th week of gestation upon request and within a maximum period of 10 days after expressing that wish.

Before the approval of the law, in Argentina abortions were only allowed if the woman suffered rape or her life is in danger, two reasons that are maintained in the new law.

The Argentine decision caused aftershocks in neighboring countries, having all kinds of reactions.

The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, declared that “the lives of Argentine children, now subject to being cut in the womb of their mothers with the consent of the State”, referring to the approval of the law in December 2020.

For its part, the Chilean Chamber of Commerce’s Commission for Women began processing the project today.
