Iga Swiatek, 19 years old and 54th in the WTA, this Saturday became the first Polish player to win Roland Garros, by beating the American in the final Sofia Kenin (6th), 6-4 and 6-1, in one hour and 24 minutes of play.
During the two weeks of Roland Garros, Swiatek has not lost a set and has only given 28 games. On Monday she will become the 17th classified in the WTA ranking.
“I was mentally strong, I tried to play aggressive, like in the previous games. But today I was very stressed and I don’t know how I won, I just wanted to be focused. I hope your injury is not very serious, ”Swiatek told Kenin, with both players crying after the duel.
The American, who started the match with a bandage on her left thigh, received medical treatment in the locker room when she trailed 2-1 in the second set. Won’t win a game again.
Swiatek started the game as he had flown over the previous six. In eight minutes he already added a break and had a 3-0 on the scoreboard.
Kenin, 21, who won the Australian Open in February, knew his options were to weather the storm and try to make a rival doubt that until now had not done so.
That’s how it went. With a mixed game and trying to trick his offensive tennis, Kenin returned the break and was 3-3.
During this stretch, Swiatek showed some sign of deconcentration, with screams and some ball, a facet that he already showed on Friday in the doubles semifinal that he lost with Nicole Melichar against the Chilean Alexa guarachi and the american Desirae Krawczyk.
With the arguments of the fight on the table, both players offered a good show in the outcome of this first round, which ended up with the Pole, with fewer ups and downs than in the initial section.
In the second set, her superiority was more evident against a Kenin who at 2-1 went to the locker room. Swiatek stayed on the track, moving so as not to get cold in the cool Parisian afternoon.
The match resumed and the whirlwind that swept Roland Garros was reactivated to score four consecutive games and achieve victory.
