This afternoon the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez, exposed before the Senate Human Rights and Citizen Security Committees of the Chamber, as a result of the case that occurred last Friday where a minor fell from the Pío Nono bridge into the Mapocho River after being hit by a Carabineros official during a demonstration in Plaza Baquedano.
The chief of staff was required by both parliamentary bodies to present the background of the government on said investigation by which a uniformed police officer was arrested and charged with the alleged crime of attempted murder.
In this regard, and in front of the two commissions -where the General Director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas, was also invited- Pérez called for responsibility, prudence and waiting for the courts to rule on the case. He argued his position in the “contradictory versions” that exist in the Prosecutor’s Office on the facts occurred on Friday afternoon in Santiago.
“We are very on top and evaluating what happened on the Pio Nono bridge. That is something we would not have wanted to happen. We are absolutely sorry for what happened, but we want to be very cautious, because there are different versions “said the chief of staff.
“We have not wanted to generate a conclusion, because this is an issue that is being seen in court. And there are contradictory versions “added.
Is so and in order not to have a “biased and definitive” opinion of the events that occurred during that day of demonstrations, Pérez read three different versions of the Public Ministry regarding the investigation they are carrying out.
“The Public Ministry, in its presentation to request, request, the formalization hearing, on Saturday presented a brief. What does that writing say? That Carabineros began to advance ‘from the Forest Park towards the bridge, in this context a Carabineros official takes a minor with his limbs, grabbing him by his feet, throwing him over the railing, falling into the Mapocho River, generating multiple fractures’ ” the Interior Minister began by saying.
Continuous: “On Sunday, the own prosecutor in charge of the case, raised a different version before the court., which establishes that the accused, in this case the policeman, ‘ran and lunges diagonally against the adolescent, taking him by his arms and pushing him in such a way that he lifts him over the railing in question and makes him fall headlong towards the Rio Mapocho ‘. In other words, we are no longer talking about the Saturday version ”.
And as a third point, Pérez realized that “when the prosecutor herself justifies the need for a substantive precautionary measure, she expresses that ‘this is the moment then, that as a result of the action of the accused, of pouncing on the victim, the accused who was running with equipment that increases weight, as a consequence of that the force increases to any throwing exercise by a third party, which in this case was a 16-year-old adolescent, causes him to fall and the officials immediately approach ‘”.
“In other words, we have, only in the Public Ministry, three versions, which I believe we have the maximum responsibility to clarify and take the appropriate measures”, Pérez concluded.
Therefore, he assured that “The call we must make is to wait for this with tranquility, responsibility, so that the courts are the ones that clarify the facts and once this happens each person can have the opinion they want to have, that they deserve to have or that they need to have about this Meanwhile let the investigation advance”.
“This is certainly a regrettable fact, but it has to be clarified in order to have a definitive opinion. Anticipating judgments, comments, on this subject, I think it can be hasty and can lead us to make mistakes. Therefore, the government supports the action of the Carabineros when it is carried out within the law and the regulations, ”the chief of staff closed.
