President Sebastián Piñera warned that he will veto the bill to reform the Migration Law if the indications just approved in committee prosper

During his visit to the Arica and Parinacota region, the president expressed his rejection of both indications. The first would allow foreigners to request, at a border crossing, a transitory work visa to look for work. The second would establish a regularization period of 90 days from the publication of the law for migrants.

“What worries me is that the Senate committee approved two indications by opposition senators, which I think are bad proposals,” he said.

For this reason, he indicated, “we do not share them, and we reject them,” stating that the modifications are “a true invitation, a stimulus to illegal immigration. That is why these two indications I hope they do not prosper, and if they are approved, I as president of Chile will veto them because I think they cause profound damage ”.

The new legal norm, promoted by the Government, seeks to replace the old legislation that was passed in 1975 during the dictatorship, and which is also one of the oldest in Latin America.

The project contemplates the creation of the National Migration Service, an entity that must administer the National Registry of Foreigners, which will be reserved, along with other changes regarding the delivery of visas, for example.

During his time in the region, he visited the Chacalluta Border Complex, in addition to the Chironta Reservoir works and presented the Plan “Step by Step, Chile recovers” for the region, which promotes public works for US $ 458 million between 2020 and 2022 to promote employment.

The program includes roads, rural drinking water projects (APR), the Paseo Borde Costero Arenillas Negras, the construction of the Chinchorro Museum, the Nuevo Norte Housing Complex and the improvement of the Urban Passage of Route 5, indicated from the Presidency.
