During Monday’s session, President Sebastián Piñera referred to the pardon project for people detained during the so-called “Social Outbreak”, in which some opposition senators work.
The president expressed his total rejection of the proposal and indicated that projects like this one threaten democracy and public security in the country.
According to President Piñera, it is intended to pardon crimes such as attempted homicide, arms trafficking, illegal possession of military weapons, fire, use of Molotov cocktails, looting, subway attacks, injuries to Carabineros and many more.
“All the people who today are deprived of freedom (…) are like this not by decision of the Government or the Prosecutor’s Office, but by decision of the courts of justice ”, argued the authority.
“In a democracy, all citizens have the right to demonstrate peacefully, however, those who commit crimes must be investigated and investigated and, when appropriate, sanctioned by the courts in accordance with the law, ”he continued.
He also indicated that Carabineros and the PDI have the constitutional mandate to safeguard public order and protect citizen security.
He mentioned that in compliance with this, “they can use legitimate and proportional force, but always respecting the law, police protocols and human rights of all people”. He added that if any member of the Armed Forces or the police does not comply with these rules, they must also be investigated and tried by law.
Total rejection
After this, President Piñera ratified the work carried out by his Government “Against all kinds of violence and terrorism.”
“We are committed to protecting public safety. Our will is to fight crime, organized crime and terrorism with all the elements that the Constitution and the law grant us ”, Piñera said.
He concluded by saying that “Our Government expresses its total disagreement and opposition to the aforementioned general pardon project and anticipates that if the project advances, the power of veto will be used to prevent its approval ”.
The Government considers that it is a bad project and that it violates public order, citizen security and democracy.
