The day of this Friday, the President Sebastián Piñera commemorated the 47 years of September 11, 1973, day in which our country lost its democracy due to a coup d’état.

In this sense, the President stated that “The events of that September 11 and subsequent circumstances still cause painful divisions and disagreements among Chileans.”

And for the same reason, in the commemorative act, the head of state wanted to highlight the lessons he left. “Today we want to remember that rupture of our democracy, to learn the lessons of that past and allow those lessons to illuminate the path of all towards a better future (…) That September 11 was a great failure for an entire society, but the exemplary way in which we recovered our democracy was a great achievement for our country. “

Added that “there are many lessons and teachingYes, but among them I want to highlight some that are sometimes forgotten; the respect and care that we owe to our democracy and our rule of law; he full commitment to the protection of human rights in all circumstances; the value of dialogue and agreements between those of us who think differently; the value of tolerance; the value of responsibility, probity and prudence in all matters that are of public interest; the value of peace and public order and the imperative to condemn violence, in any cause, form and wherever it comes from “.

On the other hand, the President took the opportunity to call on Chileans to actively participate in the plebiscite to be held on October 25.
