The President Sebastián Piñera held on Tuesday a telephone conversation with the elected president of United States, Joe Biden, where they addressed the pandemic, climate change and TPP11.
As reported by La Moneda, in the conversation Piñera addressed the main international challenges with Biden and highlighted the need to deepen relations between the United States and Latin America and Chile, to face the pandemic and the global economic recession.
In health matters, the topic was the progress of the Covid-19 vaccine and the importance of ensuring equitable access that is safe and effective for the population. In this context, both raised the need to strengthen international governance to face health pandemics.
Likewise, Piñera discussed with Biden the challenges of climate change. Both leaders agreed on the importance of complying with the Paris Agreement and the Chilean president raised the importance of committing the great world economies to carbon neutrality by 2050 and the protection of the oceans and forests.
Regarding free trade, the need to revitalize APEC and undertake necessary reforms to the World Trade Organization (WTO). In this sense, the Chilean head of state highlighted the relevance of TPP11 for our region, which will allow the strengthening of the multilateral trading system.
Finally, both leaders talked about the challenges of Latin America and the strengthening of democracy and the rule of law in the region.
In this context, Piñera raised the importance of deepening the work of the United States with Prosur and the Pacific Alliance, and of focusing our efforts to work, with all the actors, to find a democratic and peaceful solution to the crisis in Venezuela.
