President Sebastián Piñera provided new details of the massive inoculation of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech against covid-19, after the emergency authorization from the Public Health Institute (ISP).

On national television, the president indicated that Pfizer confirmed that this month the plane with the first 20 thousand vaccines will land, which will be applied to the personnel of the Intensive Care Units and the cities with the highest incidence of the virus, such as the Bío Bío region, La Araucanía, Magallanes and the Metropolitan region.

The inoculation will be voluntary and free, and the Government will inform in due time the dates to begin the process.

“Our Vaccination Plan depends on the approvals of international health authorities and our country, and their availability it will grow gradually according to the delivery capacity of the laboratories ”.

In this way, in conjunction with the Advisory Council on Vaccines and Immunization (CAVEI), the order of priority for the vaccination process was set, based on the risk levels of the different groups:

First it will be the people deployed in the covid emergency; secondly, the elderly and chronically ill, prioritizing those from Long Stay Centers; and third, the other groups of the target population, according to their degree of risk.

Starting in January, new doses would arrive to vaccinate the critical and higher risk population during the first quarter of 2021, continuing with the other groups during the first semester.

“The Ministry of Health will promptly inform the dates and places of vaccination for the different groups of the population. The objective is to protect the 15 million people that make up the target population ”, he stressed.

Likewise, he assured that “all vaccines in Chile will have the seal of efficacy and safety granted by the most recognized health institutions in the world, the approval of our Institute of Public Health, and always, the support of science, which shows categorically and with strong evidence that vaccines protect health and save lives ”.

Concern about increased infections

The President affirmed that as a result of the increase in positive cases, “we have had to make tough and difficult decisions to restrict the freedoms and mobility of people. But they were necessary to protect the health and life of our compatriots ”.

“It is true that today we are experiencing an increase in infections in the Metropolitan region. For this reason, as a precautionary measure and to mitigate second waves, such as those that affect the United States and Europe today, we decided that the Metropolitan Region will return to Phase 2 of Transition.

It is because of these antecedents that, he assured, the strategy of testing, tracing and isolating has been strengthened, multiplying by 25 the capacity to carry out PCR tests, which already total almost 6 million.

Measurements

In addition to the health crisis, the pandemic brought with it an economic crisis. For this reason, he continued, it is that to “protect people’s jobs, family income and alleviate the situation of SMEs, since March of this year we have built a Social Protection Network, which includes Emergency Family Income, Covid Bonus, Labor Protection Law, Strengthening of Unemployment Insurance, Food Baskets and Covid Christmas Bonus, which we will begin to deliver tomorrow and which benefits more than 8 million people ”.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, he recognized that “no Social Protection Network will be sufficient to offset all its effects. But we are still doing our best to reach out with the greatest help and relief to all those who need it ”, he closed.
