This Sunday, President Sebastián Piñera attended a mass in honor of Eugenio Nain, a carabinero who was killed by unknown persons this Friday in the La Araucanía region in the middle of a police procedure.

“This crime is not going to go unpunished. The cowardly murderers are going to be found, tried and condemned ”, the president said categorically at a press point after the mass.

Meanwhile, Piñera highlighted the work of the Carabineros and the nearly 60,000 soldiers who protect the country’s security.

“They do it with a commitment and vocation that deserves all our appreciation, affection, respect and gratitude,” he added.

In that sense, he said that Carabineros is fundamental for the security of the rule of law, democracy, ensuring that they are “the first line” in the defense of these concepts in the country.

The head of state, in the face of the recent strong and constant criticism against the institution, expressed his “deep appreciation and gratitude” for the work of the Carabineros.

“In these times, when so many are determined to attack and weaken the Carabineros, I want to appreciate my deepest appreciation and gratitude for the work that Carabineros does and say that I have seen them with my own eyes, over the decades, how they fulfill their duty beyond what is required of any person, “he said.

“We are many who do our duty, but there are very few who swear that they are willing to give their own lives to protect our lives,” he concluded.
