The mayor of a municipality in southern Romania died 11 days ago because of coronavirus but he was reelected by an overwhelming majority in Sunday’s municipal elections.
Ion Aliman, who died on September 17 at the age of 57, added 1,057 of the 1,600 votes cast in the town of Deveselu, as reported by local media on Monday.
After the polls closed, the inhabitants visited his tomb to celebrate his victory.
“We went to congratulate him”wrote a Deveselu resident on Facebook, with a photo showing dozens of people holding candles at the local cemetery.
The town of Deveselu already became known some time ago due to a conflict between one of its inhabitants and the command of a United States anti-missile shield, which was inaugurated in 2016.
Dumitru Bleja’s 250 sheep had inadvertently become a threat to the security of the military site because they grazed near the fence and frequently activated the warning systems.
The villager was ordered to demolish his sheep shed and take them elsewhere but responded by asking for damages of 18,000 euros ($ 20,980), which was eventually rejected by the courts in 2018.
