It was around 2:00 p.m. that an official of the Calama City Medical Legal Service (SML) called the PDI to report a fact that they lived in that establishment. The SML worker told the civil police that, according to what he reported in his call, police officers had left a seriously injured person abandoned to one side of the agency’s building.

At that time, PDI detectives came to the scene and confirmed the information provided by the SML official. The person was seriously injured therefore detectives called an ambulance to take the victim to the hospital in the area. While waiting for the arrival of health personnel, the person allegedly abandoned by the uniformed men died at the scene. Just before his death, the victim managed to identify himself. According to those familiar with the investigation, it is Jaime Veizaga Sánchez and he was of Bolivian nationality.

Immediately, the Calama Prosecutor’s Office issued an order to investigate that at this moment is in the hands of the Bricrim Calama. The first steps were aimed at confirming the complaint that the person had been left in front of the SML by Carabineros personnel. After the first expert reports, the Public Ministry requested the Calama Guarantee Court to arrest the second corporal Navarro Thumb and the carabinero Ilton Zambrano Marin, both from the 1st Calama Police Station, who went together in a mobile checkpoint. The investigation, which according to sources in the case was decreed reserved, was in charge of the prosecutor Raúl Marabolí and the arrests were made by the PDI.

The uniformed police have already referred to this matter in a general way and without going into details. “Given the discovery of a deceased person in the city of Calama, which occurred after a police procedure carried out by two officials, we wish to inform that both police officers were placed at the disposal of the prosecution and an internal investigation was initiated to clarify the circumstances in which they would have the events occurred and determine possible responsibilities”, Said the head (S) of the Antofagasta Zone of the Carabineros, general Luis Aguilera.

“Carabineros will attend with maximum transparency and in a timely manner to help clarify this situation. There can be no doubt for the public about the motives and context of this person’s death, that is why we will be active collaborators in this investigation ”, added Aguilera.

The Antofagasta Prosecutor’s Office did not provide further information in this regard. The two defendants will go to detention control this Wednesday at the Guarantee Court of Calama.
