Patricio Manns, one of the symbols of the local songwriting and fundamental in the development of the New Chilean Song in the 60s, has been hospitalized since last Thursday 3 at the Bupa Reñaca Clinic due to a series of complications derived from the diabetes that afflicts him a few years ago. Yesterday, the same venue stated in a statement that the artist’s condition is “stable.”
His wife, Alejandra Lastra, with whom he has been since 1979 and also an essential work partner in the dissemination of his work – “his motor”, as defined by Roberto Márquez de Illapu-, is also interned in the place. In her case, as a consequence of stage 4 advanced colon cancer, under a situation classified as “very delicate” by the same healthcare center.
“Indeed, they are both in a delicate situation, for different reasons that are not related to the pandemic or the Covid-19, they are things that come from before,” confirms Lucio Parada, close to the family and who for years also He has served as a producer and artistic advisor to the couple. Manns is 83 years old today.
In addition, Parada says that the artist has undergone a series of examinations for an intervention every day, which will be carried out today, with risks associated with his chronic pathologies, according to the clinic.
“It is to avoid further complications. He has a foot injury from his diabetes and we are looking at the best way to deal with this situation. It is being evaluated to be the least invasive possible ”, assures Parada. Although he qualifies the situation as “a serious concern”, he reaffirms that the musician is not “at risk of life.”
In fact, he is aware, he has been able to speak on the phone and has received visits from figures such as deputies Camila Vallejo and Amaro Labra.
Horacio Salinas, one of his contemporaries and current president of the Chilean Copyright Society (SCD), also had a telephone conversation with him and describes: “We are living very painful moments. It hurts us a lot that Patricio, at 83, is going through this dramatic moment. He with his wife, who is by his side, fading very quickly. I spoke with him yesterday, because he can talk, and he told me: ‘I’m in the middle of the sea with very big waves.’ And that expression shows his lucidity and that ability he has to choose the exact words ”.

Salinas believes that Manns should have received one of the last National Awards that were given, the one for Literature or Music. For nearly a decade there have been campaigns for this, promoted by universities or by singer-songwriters such as Mauricio Redolés, who highlight a rich work that exceeds music, with undisputed peaks in the songs “Arriba en la cordillera” and “El cautivo de Til Til ”.
Parada emphasizes that Manns was hit hard in recent days by his new absence from such awards, added to the global context that he has had to face with the pandemic, with most of the artists unable to travel or play live. The author himself born in the town of Nacimiento continued to offer presentations in limited places until recently.
For their part, entities such as the Alerce label and the SCD itself are managing some instances to help Manns financially and to support him in his most complex situation of late.
