During the night of this Friday, the death of Patricio Guijón, Salvador Allende’s family doctor, was confirmed. and the only eyewitness to Salvador Allende’s suicide on September 11, 1973.
The doctor lived his last days, until he was 88 years old, in his hometown, Putú, in Constitución, according to 24 Hours.
Coincidentally, he died on September 4, exactly 50 years after the triumph of Popular Unity in the 1970 elections.
According to historical records and his own testimony, he was in line to leave the Palacio de La Moneda on the day of the coup, but he decided to return at the last minute to the Independence Hall and when he got there he witnessed Allende commit suicide.
After that, Guijón was taken to the Military School and then transferred to Dawson Island, where he spent three and a half months, until he was returned to Santiago.
After confirming his death, the Municipality of Constitución announced a 3-day communal mourning.
