Fifty people remained in La Moneda during the bombing that ended the government of Salvador Allende.

Among them was the head of State’s general practitioner, Patricio Guijón Klein, a physician who died on Friday night, coinciding with the date on which the 50th anniversary of the Popular Unity triumph at the polls is commemorated.

Guijón was an eyewitness to the fall of the socialist project.

“Bombs fell towards Teatinos Street, where the Intendancy and the Ministry of Foreign Relations operated. After a movement of people took place, they asked us to go to the second floor because tear gas bombs were falling and they gave us gas masks. We saw smoke and felt stinging in our eyes, “he told PDI in the early 1990s. Before leaving the building bombed on September 11, 1973, he returned for something that would allow him to remember the day.

“In the little corner where I had left the mask, there was an open door, through which I see President Allende at the moment he fired as he sat down, because I saw the movement what he does with a submachine gun. The shot blows the skull and the encephalic mass, which was scattered in the back box, in a curtains, even on the ceiling. For those mechanical things I took his pulse, but there was nothing to do. I stayed next to Allende’s body and after about twenty minutes two soldiers entered, at which I raised my hands, ”Guijón said in the judicial testimony.

The doctor was detained for a few days at the Military School and then taken to Dawson Island as a political prisoner, staying there for three and a half months. He was then returned to Santiago, where he was under house arrest until March or April of the following year. In time he would go back to work at the Salvador Hospital.

The doctor spent his last years in the town of Putú, in the municipality of Constitución, whose municipality declared three days of mourning in his honor. He was 88 years old at the time of his death.
