A woman in her 40s suffered an unusual accident after performing a Covid-19 nasal test: had a cerebrospinal fluid leak after the lining of his brain was injured
The case is the first of its kind, after millions of tests performed with the same procedure, according to the medical journal. Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery JAMA, which released a study on the case of the American.
The publication highlights that the woman had a pre-existing condition: “the patient had a cranial defect that had not been diagnosed and had been present since 2017 (according to X-rays in her medical history)”.
Before undergoing hernia surgery in July, the woman was tested for Covid-19. Soon after, she noticed a clear liquid coming out of her nose. Then came the headaches, stiff neck, vomiting and other symptoms for which she was finally hospitalized and treated in time.
According to the study, “taking the test did not by itself result in a violation of the cranial base, but rather caused trauma to the woman’s pre-existing condition“.
The researchers warn that patients with skull base defects, operations in the area, or a history of diseases linked to the paranasal sinuses, should consider alternative methods to nasal tests to detect Covid-19.
