The Municipality of Rapa Nui informed La Radio that the Directorate General Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC) and the company Latam Airlines decided to suspend the flight in the context of Safe Return Plan to the island, after a request was made to reschedule the arrival of 284 people for this coming Friday, February 26.
The mayor of the island, Pedro Edmunds PaoaHe pointed out that the Ministry of the Interior has been “silent” and “has done nothing” to resolve a conflict that has already lasted 13 days.
Municipality sources indicated that this information would have been communicated to the municipality as a client and that initially the request was made for Wednesday, but the airline would have responded that Friday was a possible date.
However, as raised from the town hall, they made the decision to suspend that flight for security reasons, in relation to the group of people who the runway of the Mataveri Airport was taken on Friday, February 12, and that has remained since then in the vicinity of the infrastructure manifesting itself near a tree called by the islanders as “the gomero”.
In any case, the DGAC indicated in its Twitter account that the airport and the runway remain operational. In fact, there are 2 flights where only products arrive, which have continued to arrive on the island and correspond to charter flights contracted by Rapa Nui businessmen and another one charged to Latam.
The mayor of the area, Pedro Edmunds PaoaHe said that the company consulted the Civil Aeronautical General Directorate and it recommended that the flight not arrive, assuring that this conflict will be delayed for another week.
The community leader said that the actor who has to unblock the conflict is the Ministry of the Interior and was blunt in saying that they have been silent and have not done anything.
Radio sources indicate that the initial intention was to review the flight manifest and verify which people could not be qualified to reach Rapa Nui. However, when discovering that the 284 people were authorized, and also by the government itself, the progress of the conflict management stalled.
Administratively, the Government of Rapa Nui or the Municipality of Valparaíso, as the representative of the Interior, must make a decision about what will happen to the visitors, while the protesters keep rejecting the arrival of tourists, despite the fact that they all have the requirements.
In this context, the inhabitants asked that only native people of Rapa Nui arrive, with their respective relatives, leaving out, for example, the teachers who returned to the island as part of the return plan.
