The Quintero Court of Letters and Guarantee decided to order preventive detention for Mario Ulloa and Miguel Soto, accused by the Public Ministry as co-perpetrators of the crimes of kidnapping and rape with homicide against Pascal Alvarado, a 17-year-old young man seen for the last time on November 8, 2011 in Puchuncaví.
In just a couple of weeks an investigation that took years found the suspects – who were detained in different parts of the country – and finally granted them the precautionary measure, allocating 120 more days of investigation.
Prosecutor Luis Ventura recounted the facts taken from a psychological interview with Miguel Soto, in which he related how the victim was put into his car, beaten and sexually assaulted. According to Soto, while he slept that night, Mario Ulloa killed him.
Ventura pointed out that this statement, added to the evidence presented by the Public Ministry, was enough to order the precautionary measure, which was accepted by the court.
In conversation with Radio Bío Bío, Jeanette Soto, Pascal’s mother, recalled that on the day of his disappearance she received a missed call from her daughter, and when she returned the call she only heard a scream and communication was cut off.
Jeanette recalled the difficulties the case had when the prosecutor Mauricio Dunner was in charge of the case, and that in 2016 they received specific information that reactivated the investigation.
Pascal’s mother says that the case gained momentum again when one of the defendants told a co-worker what had happened.
At the hearing to formalize the investigation, the magistrate ordered the admission of the accused to the Valparaíso Penitentiary Complex, considering that the freedom of the accused constitutes a danger to the security of society. In addition, it set the investigation period at 120 days.
