In an unchecking of the position that the Minsal and the Government have deployed, the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, complained that the press published that he refused to deliver the emails requested by the Prosecutor’s Office in the framework of the investigation of deaths from Covid-19.
“I represent the Ministry of Health, it is not that I personally refuse. It is unusual that every time they put that news, they put ‘Paris refuses’, it is not like that, it is the Ministry of Health, the legal team of the Ministry of Health, “said the Secretary of State during a guideline on measures for adults older during the pandemic.
The delivery of the emails requested by the Prosecutor’s Office has escalated to the Supreme Court. His access has been stiffly opposed by the Minsal, and the defenses of President Sebastián Piñera, former Minister Jaime Mañalich and undersecretaries Arturo Zúñiga and Paula Daza, using arguments such as national security or errors in the application form.
This position was even ratified by the government spokesman, Jaime Bellolio, who argued that what the Prosecutor’s Office intends is a “kind of trawling” in its request for information and the fact that the “Ministry of Health has refused to that computers are fully accessed, in no case does that mean any attempt to hide something. It is exactly the opposite ”.
However, in a document addressed to the highest court, Xavier Armendáriz, Central North regional prosecutor, stated that if the Supreme Court accepts the refusal to deliver the emails, it would set a “disastrous precedent”, given that “it cannot be left to the discretion of the required which information is delivered”.
“We are going to deliver all the information that the Supreme demands of us”
In this context, Paris reiterated its intention to deliver all the information ordered by the Supreme Court, but explained that they appealed to the highest court because they considered that there were errors in the request ordered in the first instance.
“We are going to deliver all the information that the Supreme Court demands of us, it was considered that the way in which the information was requested in the first instance was not adequate and that is why that request was addressed to the Supreme Court, and everything that ask the Supreme Court, we are going to hand it over, ”said the minister.
“We are not to hide any information and we want to collaborate with justice, I defend the independence of the powers of the State (…) The information was badly requested and that is why we asked for postponement, nothing more,” he concluded.
