Great commotion not only in the Bío Bío Region but also in the country’s medical community caused the death, this Sunday morning, of Dr. Carlos Grant del Río, director of the Concepción Health Service, as a result of covid-19.
The death of Dr. Grant, who was one of the main coordinators of the network against the pandemic at the beginning of last year, occurred after 36 days connected to an oxygenation membrane, in the ICU of the hospital where he worked and which bears the name of his grandfather, Guillermo Grant Benavente (HGGB).
One of the first to speak out for his death was the Minister of Health, Dr. Enrique Paris, who posted on his Twitter account a message of condolences and praise for the work he did.

Radio Bío Bío in Concepción made contact with Minister Paris who, clearly moved by his death, regretted the outcome and sent his condolences both to his family and to the HGGB officials who were his co-workers.
Overcoming the emotion, Paris took advantage of the instance to draw the attention of those who remain irresponsible in the face of the advance of the pandemic.
“We are experiencing a critical situation, with an increase in infections, with an even more contagious strain. Health officials who work day by day with patients also suffer and, as is the case with Carlos, other health officials have also died (due to the covid). And this while we have people who make parties, celebrate, leave the country and do not return with their PCR, or we have mayors who do not comply with sanitary regulations and organize dance fairs “, he denounced.
“It is a dichotomy. An enormous distance between what the health system is experiencing and those who do not understand the situation we are experiencing ”, declared Paris.
Consulted by the greatest memory that Dr. Grant left in him, Minister Paris highlighted his coordinating work at the beginning of the pandemic.
“The first patient diagnosed with coronavirus in Chile was confirmed in the laboratory that he set up. It was the first PCR “, he pointed.
“Carlos worked at full. Remember how many patients the hospital received, even from the Metropolitan Region, and then we had to give back, receiving patients from Bío Bío in other regions ”, was his memory.
“In addition, he started with the cancer center … which I hope we can open one day”, concluded the Secretary of State, before yielding again to the emotion over the departure of his colleague and friend.

A family devoted to health despite the tragedy
The loss of the doctor Carlos Grant del Rio (64) deeply marks the community of the Bío Bío region, and recalls in a certain way the life of his grandfather, Dr. Guillermo Grant Benavente, named after the Regional Hospital of Concepción.
Guillermo Grant, who was born in 1887, studied medicine at the University of Chile and specialized in Europe, before returning to Concepción. He married Matilde Pimentel with whom he had six children: Guillermo and Roberto who were also doctors, in addition to Fernando, Schedule, Lucía and Matilde.
However, his two daughters died very young from tuberculosis, as did his wife Matilde. Despite the pain, he never stopped his medical and teaching work, being one of the first professors at the University of Concepción and dying while still working as a professor at the Medical Clinic, on August 19, 1960.
