A sharp increase in delinquent people was recorded in April, as the number grew at 120 thousand debtors during the last month alone, as evidenced by the Debt Report prepared by the Universidad San Sebastián and Equifax.

According to the report, a total of 4,935,226 people are delinquent, an increase of 2.5 percent compared to March (4,815,695 debtors).

This is an effect of the pandemic, given that in the quarter between January and March defaulters only grew by 80 thousand.

“In one quarter we increased 80 thousand, between December and March and in the last month we have already reached 120 thousand. In addition to that, there are many people who have rescheduled their debts, who are not delinquent today, that means that they have kicked the debt forward, will they be able to pay it or will they not be able to pay it in the future? That only God knows when this health crisis will end, “he said. Gonzalo Edwards, dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the U. San Sebastián.

The report also shows that in April there was a decrease in the average amount of default, which decreased by 4.5 percent, since it went from 1,887,930 pesos in the month of March to 1,802,346 pesos in the month of April.
