Former minister Pablo Longueira (UDI) will be able to vote in the next elections, as confirmed by Servel, which has not received any request from the courts to suspend this right in the framework of the investigation of the SQM case.
The confusion was due to a post by The clinic, in which it was indicated that after the accusation of bribery and tax crimes, Longueira could not vote in the November primaries or run for the presidency of his party or the Constitutional Convention.
However, Servel confirmed that on its website Longueira appears as “not authorized to vote” because Chile Vamos did not register primaries in the commune of Las Condes, where you have your electoral domicile, so you will be able to participate in the next electoral processes.
After knowing the information of The clinic, Longueira stated that “within 24 hours of registering my candidacy to preside over the UDI, I have learned that the Servel has disqualified me from voting and, therefore, from being a candidate. I was accused by the Prosecutor’s Office in July of the year 2018, more than two years ago, since then I have voted in all the elections, as was public knowledge in the recent Plebiscite. “
“I demand that they tell me what changed now, less than 24 hours after registering my candidacy, to make this decision”he added.
“It is clear that those who devised this shameful maneuver do not know me. I myself warned, several days ago, of the attempts to lower me as secretariat. Time will be in charge of unmasking the articulators of this dark operation“, he raised.
For its part, Mauricio Daza, plaintiff lawyer in the case, clarified that “Pablo Longueira has been suspended from his right to vote from the moment he was accused by the Public Ministry for crimes that are assigned an afflictive penalty. However, in accordance with the law, they are the guarantee courts which have to inform the Servel on a monthly basis about those people who are disabled “.
“Many times this information has a delay that justifies the fact that during a period of time, in which these people are accused and also appear as authorized in the Servel,” he said.
