30,000 troops are those that the Armed Forces have deployed throughout the country to collaborate in monitoring compliance with the measures established as a result of the pandemic. One of these is the curfew, in force since March 22 and that has been maintained uninterruptedly.
Due to the regression of the Metropolitan Region to phase 2 of the Step by Step Plan, it was consulted to the Minister of Defense, Mario Desbordes Jiménez, on the possibility of some modification to the measure, which these days is in force between 00.00 and 05.00 am. Overflows, assured that this provision is under constant evaluation. “All measurements are dynamic, there is nothing rigid. Therefore, the hours can be lengthened, they can be shortened, it also depends on each region ”.
For the same reason, the Secretary of State stated that it is not ruled out to think that the measure is modified. “I cannot rule out the possibility that the curfew will be changed in terms of the schedule, but it is a decision made by the Covid Committee after an exhaustive analysis with the numbers, and so far in the country the numbers are not good ”.
The Defense Minister also assured that the curfew must be examined according to the reality of each region the country, and even other restrictions could be added. “There are regions where vehicle restrictions will probably have to be evaluated to reduce the movement of people and others where greater flexibility can be made.”
In addition, the minister referred to the extension of the constitutional state of exception for another 90 days. Overflows justified the measure in order that it is due to the fact that the public’s response to the health measures has not been ideal.
“If we extend the state of exception it is because people are not complying. We can’t put a military on every cornerThe main thing here is the responsibility of each one of us, ”he said. “We have to understand that the virus will not recede if all Chileans do not take responsibility for what corresponds,” he added.
It was not the only topic he analyzed. He was also consulted by a eventual resignation from the cabinet to assume a presidential candidacy. Something that, at the time, the president of RN, Rafael Prohens, already recognized that they would ask him. Desbordes did not confirm or rule out taking that step.
“I am 100% dedicated Minister of Defense .. I keep working until I talk with the President (Sebastián Piñera) and we see if I go out or not, I do not rule it out, but not for now”.
