On Monday afternoon it was confirmed that the Democrat Jon Ossoff won a seat in the United States Senate in the second round of Georgia with 50.28% of the votes, according to figures from The Associated Press.
With this victory, added to that of Raphael Warnock ratified this same day, the Democratic Party added 50 of the 100 members that has that instance.
As in the United States the vice president of the nation is the president of the SenateAfter taking office, Kamala Harris will have to give her casting vote to give victory to her party in all the decisions in which there is a tie, at least in the initiatives that require a simple majority.
Ossoff’s victory also means that the Democratic Party seized the control of the legislative branch as a whole, since in the November election the House of Representatives was composed of 222 Democrats, four seats over the number required to obtain a majority.
With this, Joe Biden will be able to govern relatively calmly and legislate in matters that were part of his campaign, such as environmental, health and education issues.
In his second administration, Barack Obama lost the Senate, thereby Mitch McConnell (Kentucky) did everything possible – successfully – so that the former president, for example, could not even install justices in the Supreme Court or in the federal courts of the 13 judicial circuits of the country.
The news that two Democrats will represent Georgia in the Senate came at a day of tension and confrontations in Washington DC, especially on the Capitol, where pro-Trump protesters entered the Congress building to protest against the traditional session in which both senators and deputies approve the results of the Electoral College.
Inside the Congress there was looting and destruction. One photograph even shows one of the members of the mob inside the office of the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, with her feet on her desk.
Due to the chaos around the world, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a curfew from 18:00 local time, 20:00 in Chile.
