While time is running fast for January 11, the day of the registration of the candidates for the elections of the Constitutional Convention, the opposition still cannot find unity, despite the multiple calls to get a single list that allows them to face better foot to the right in these elections.
This is how it was shown on Tuesday’s session: on the one hand, the most social democratic pole of the opposition, made up of the parties that make up the Constituent Unit (Socialist Party, PPD, Radical Party and PRO), the Liberal Party, and deputies who they left the Frente Amplio, as the former RD Natalia Castillo and Pablo Vidal and the liberal Vlado Mirosevic signed a declaration in which they make “a call for the broadest unity of the opposition, without exclusions, for the elections of the Constitutional Convention.”
The conveners – without the DC or Ciudadanos, who are also part of the Constituent Unit – organized a virtual press conference this afternoon, accompanied by the writer Jorge Baradit and the poet from Chiloe Rosabetty Muñoz, among others, in which they presented this statement, also signed by twelve figures from the independent world, such as the Agustín Squella National Prize.
However, at the same time, another opposition bloc, the one that groups Chile Digno and the Frente Amplio, met in a cafe in downtown Santiago to formalize the installation of a new opposition bloc, as announced by El Mostrador. .
Its main objective will be to face in a single list the candidates for the Constitutional Convention, immediately, and extend the work to the elections of regional governors and mayors. In governors, they would already have an almost closed agreement: 5 for Chile Digno, 5 for Wide Front and in 4 there would be primaries. Meanwhile, the presidential is not closed. “If it happens, it happens”, commented the president of the PC Guillermo Teillier.
At the meeting they drew up a work schedule that starts tomorrow with the meeting of the electoral teams to refine the squad, with weekly meetings. It was also agreed to prepare constitutional proposals with grassroots organizations, such as the Social Table, where entities such as No + AFP and the Teachers College.
Up to the instance, in which the leaders of the PC, FRVS, RD, Comunes, Social Convergence and Humanist Action parties participated, the calls for unity came from the most social democratic side of the opposition.
However, there is skepticism in this sector about these locations. “Empty calls for unity by the press are useless. Today we are making progress towards a horizon of dignity and justice, which are two of the keywords of the past year and of the future. With the PC, FRVS and AH we have ideas in common to get there and we invite everyone to debate around ideas, without exclusions, without arbitrary imaginary lines that accommodate only one party, “he explained to The counter Francisca Perales, vice president of Social Convergence.
In this sector they point to a unit, but with content, they point out. As the president of the Regionalist Federation, Jaime Mulet, notified, “we are going to talk with all those who, like us, seek transformation and profound changes to the neoliberal model.” His sayings fit with what was settled in the official document of the XXVI National Congress of the CP, prepared on December 11, where the communists are available for “the formation of a more robust coalition in its composition” but that leaves out the “sectors who have been for consensus and agreements ”with the right.
The call for unity
On the other axis, and as time passes for the inscription of lists, worries spread. “If we go on several lists, the right is generally ordered at the time of their elections, and if they arrive on a single list, they will be overrepresented in the Constitutional Convention (…) If this happens, we will not be listening to the mandate of the Ballot boxes in the plebiscite, which almost 80% told us that they want changes, which must be expressed in a Constitution that unites us and not that divides us, like the current one ”, assured the president of the PPD, Heraldo Muñoz, who articulated the statement unit of the “social democratic” sector.
The text points out that “the future of Chile is at stake in the elaboration of the new Constitution, including the possibility of establishing a Social and Democratic State of Law, for which the legitimate differences must be set aside to achieve this higher purpose” .
“The current Constitution has granted an unjustified veto power to the minority, which must be definitively removed in favor of citizens’ rights. That is the challenge that we have ahead, for which we call to agree on a single Opposition list for the Constitutional Convention, which brings together militants, independents and social leaders. From now on, we put ourselves at the disposal of this unitary purpose ”, adds the statement.
The text has, in addition to the signatures of the party presidents, with the support of the president of the Senate, Adriana Muñoz (PPD), and the independents Paola Tapia, former Minister of Transportation; Agustín Squella, National Prize for Humanities; Claudio Castro, mayor of Renca; Lucia Dammert, political scientist; Horacio Salinas, musician; Daniel Stingo, attorney; Jorge Baradit, writer; Yuc Ramon Kong, Emergency Physician; Pablo Dittborn, editor; Marcelo Mena, former Minister of the Environment; Isabel Amor, from Fundación Iguales; Aldo Valle, former U. de Valparaíso rector and candidate for the Constituent Unit for the Valparaíso government.
