“Where were the human rights protocols of the Carabineros in the repression on the bridge over Mapocho and the young man pushed into the river? The government must immediately remove General Mario Rozas”, Said the president of the Party for Democracy, Heraldo Muñoz, when images of a minor who participated in the demonstrations on Friday in the vicinity of Plaza Baquedano were released and ended up falling into the river after being intercepted by a police officer in Pío Nerd.
Several opposition figures issued statements along the same lines. The senator of the Socialist Party and former Minister of the Interior José Miguel Insulza noted when commenting on the recordings of the event that “the evidence is clear: a policeman pushes a young man from the bridge; that is a serious crime and the command must respond ”.
Senator Alejandro Guillier had a similar opinion. “The horrifying images of a carabinero pushing a young protester into the Mapocho River reflect the deep decomposition of the Carabineros ”, he stated. In addition, the former candidate for La Moneda called on President Sebastián Piñera to remove the general director of the Carabineros and appoint “urgently a civil inspector of the institution.”
From the Frente Amplio, meanwhile, referred to what happened the deputy Gabriel Boric, stating that “this is an assassination attempt, those who did it are criminals, and those who defend it are accomplices.”
The bloc also issued a statement in which they argue that “in view of the criminal actions of the Carabineros, we condemn the act that affected a 16-year-old teenager today, we demand the resignation of Rozas and we propose to start now the re-founding of the institution so that at once respect human rights for all ”.
For his part, the mayor of Recoleta, Daniel Jadue commented on a video about the event and assured that “this record of horror should be sufficient for the Interior Minister and the Director of the Carabineros to make their positions available.”
The Socialist Party joined in the demand for the resignation of the general director of the Carabineros, also requesting the “immediate discharge of those involved and that the civil authorities assume their responsibility for repression.”
