Opposition calls on Government for millionaire budget cuts for Science, Education and Culture | National

The opposition senators Guido Girardi, Carlos Montes and Yasna Provoste, called on the government to reallocate budget resources and correct the cuts it made in science, education and culture.

For the Socialist senator and member of the Education Commission, Carlos Montes, here there is clearly an aggression towards the universities of the Council of Rectors, indicating that they are not asking for resources to be increased but for there to be a readjustment of the amounts.

His counterpart from the Christian Democrats and also a member of the Education commission, Yasna Provoste, accused the Government of using the budget in an over-ideological way to install its social logic, making the point in the 3 billion pesos that were cut from the program PACE, which allows vulnerable students to enter college.

The Executive Vice President of Cruch and rector of the University of Santiago, Juan Manuel Zolezzi, indicated that many countries in situations similar to ours, what they have done is invest in science, innovation, digital transformation; taking an important leap, adding that the cut of 42 billion pesos in basal contributions will be a hard blow for the institutions.

The rector of the University of Chile, Ennio Vivaldi, said that a measure of this type is not understood and detailed the approaches that the rectors have proposed to correct this budget decrease.

In addition, Rector Vivaldi questioned that in extreme situations such as the pandemic, state universities cannot borrow, unless authorized by the Government, also requesting that the implementation of regulated fees, scheduled for next year, be postponed.
