After the magnitude 7 earthquake registered during the early hours of Tuesday with its epicenter in Huasco and the string of aftershocks, from the National Emergency Office (Onemi) they reported that It is in the presence of “a seismic sequence” in the north.

The director of Onemi, Ricardo Toro, explained that “We are in the presence of a seismic sequence that is registering as of midnight on Tuesday, affecting mainly the north“.

He indicated that the earthquake at 00:09 on Tuesday in the Atacama Region was “followed throughout the day today by more than 90 aftershocks, 10 of which have been perceptible by the population“The main ones being 6.2 Richter this morning and 6.4 Richter at 17:10.

From the National Seismological Center, its director, Sergio Barrientos, complemented that “the number of aftershocks is very similar to that of the 6.9 earthquake in 2017, so far it is presented as a sequence that has a main earthquake magnitude 7.0 and the most normal thing that happens is that these continue to decrease over time, which would be the most likely scenario“.

These statements were delivered on Tuesday night after a technical table to analyze the situation in the note area, a meeting where the directors of Onemi, SHOA and the National Seismological Center participated, together with the regional directors of Onemi from Antofagasta, Atacama and Coquimbo , via telematics.
