The Spanish Formula One driver, Carlos Sainz, will leave McLaren to run in 2021 and 2022 with Ferrari, after announcing this Thursday the Italian team to sign in to replace the German Sebastian Vettel.
“I am very happy to announce that I will race for Scuderia Ferrari in 2021 and the future that awaits me with the team,” said Carlos Sainz, 25, quoted in a Ferrari statement.
“I still have an important year ahead with McLaren Racing and I look forward to competing with them again this season,” added the Spaniard, who will join the Monegasque Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.
Sainz, who debuted in F1 in 2015, He reaches one of the historical teams after completing a great 2019 season in which he achieved his first podium in the World Cup.
In his first year with McLaren, the Spanish driver was third in Brazil after a great comeback from the pitt lane and finished sixth in the Drivers’ World Championship.
“Carlos has shown that he has talent and the technical capacity and virtues necessary to make it perfectly fit our family,” said team principal Mattia Binotto in the statement.
“We have embarked on a new cycle with the aim of returning to the top in Formula 1”, said Binotto, for whom the pair of pilots formed by Leclerc and Sainz “will be the best possible combination to help us achieve the objectives we have set for ourselves.”
Sainz, who aspires to replicate his father’s successes in the World Rally Championship in Formula 1, will follow in Fernando Alonso’s footsteps in the Italian team.
