New round of La Moneda with mayors for Phase 2 in the RM: Carter qualifies the measure as “improvised” and other councilors demand to reactivate social aid

The announcement that all the communes of the Metropolitan Region will regress to Phase 2 of Transition as of this Thursday, December 10, fell like a bucket of cold water among the mayors.

In the municipal world, the news has already generated reactions, and some mayors like Rodolfo Carter (exUDI) criticized the “improvised” measure, and others like RN Germán Codina appealed directly to the Government to activate the necessary economic aid.

“Once again the Government takes an unconsulted and unreasonable measure. We all want to help reduce infections, but trying to ban Christmas, not even the Grinch would have thought of it. Unfortunately we found out again from the press, we all want the coronavirus to recede, but let’s do it well, without improvisations, and talking among all, particularly the Government listening, it would do it very good, “said an annoyed Mayor Carter.

For his part, Codina appealed for the measure to be not only sanitary, but to be accompanied by “an injection of important resources for so many families who were resuming their commercial activity and obviously will be harmed.

“Obviously from the health point of view one can understand it, however, I think it is very important that the Government act as a team in this. If this decision is to be made, the aid in the merchandise and financial boxes must be reactivated “, he indicated in Radio Bío BíOR.

Along the same lines, Mauro Tamayo, mayor of Cerro Navia, indicated that “concrete measures are required in the social sphere, especially in communes with higher mortality rates such as Cerro Navia, San Ramón, Pedro Aguirre Cerda, and end with the contradictory messages of the national authority ”.

In turn, the mayor of La Granja, Felipe Delpin, also pointed to the lack of communication with the Government. “We were not consulted, at no time was this issue touched on, not even tangentially … Nothing was said,” said the president of the Health Commission of the Chilean Association of Municipalities (AChM) and who also integrates the Covid table -19.

The drama of the Christmas fairs

Specifically, some councilors such as the UDI Evelyn Mathei in Providencia decided to suspend the entrepreneurial Christmas fairs, an announcement that other colleagues do not share. This is the case of DC Felipe Delpín de La Granja, who notified that “I am not going to hold the Christmas fairs (…) people have already paid their patents, many neighbors invested in a business, thousands of people are working.”

Carter agrees on this point and stated that “suppose that only with the Armed Forces. We are going to end, with the Christmas fairs that are all over Chile, that trade will be banned at the weekend, it is simply to believe that you have the upper hand, in circumstances where you only have the mango ”.

According to the Florida mayor, “this is not solved with repression, but rather with conviction by trying to obtain a behavior in the citizens. In the neighborhoods where people sell the only thing they have at their Christmas fair, are they going to tell them that they can’t sell on the weekend? Are we going to wait for scenes where the Armed Forces have to repress the workers? Nobody wants that”.

Unlike Carter, Matthei avoided directly criticizing the government. “We are very sad and frustrated at having to go back to phase 2. The most important thing is that we take care of ourselves and that we are super responsible. Hopefully we can get back to Phase 3 or 4 as quickly as possible, ”said the mayor.

According to what has been announced by the Minsal, the commerce that is not essential must be closed on weekends, and they can only open from Monday to Friday.

The authority also announced that in Step 2 the permit will work at the national level so that all restaurants can open only their terraces, with a maximum duration of two hours per person in the place. Meanwhile, in Step 3 it can be opened inside the premises and with 25% of the capacity.

Meanwhile, those schools that are operating should not close due to the transfer to Step 2 in any region of the country as established. Also, as established in Transition Step 2, interregional travel is prohibited.

For Minister Enrique Paris, “in the event that for any reason the figures continue to deteriorate or there is a significant setback in the way the virus is spreading, we will return to Quarantine.”
