The government reported this Sunday new changes in phase 2 of Transition of the Step by Step plan to control covid-19, which will allow churches to carry out religious gatherings such as masses and services.

Through a statement, it was indicated that religious cults may be held with a maximum of 20 people in open spaces Y a maximum of 10 indoors.

“These gauges may be implemented during the days that services are held in communes that are in phase 2 of the Step by Step plan, from Monday to Sunday, when there is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, attendees must carry their travel permits, enabled for a maximum of two hours and can only get one per weekend at www.comisariavirtual.cl “, it was added.

As mentioned by the Archbishopric of Santiago in another statement, the decision was made after statements made by “the Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Celestino Aós, together with its Auxiliary Bishops, and of various religious confessions. They asked to review the measure that prohibited the holding of worship with the presence of the faithful, considering it an attack against freedom of worship.

The vicar general of the Archdiocese of Santiago, Monsignor Cristián Roncagliolo, said after hearing the news that they value the decision since “it respects the exercise of religious freedom of all confessions ”.

He added that this “cannot be understood as an oversight, quite the contrary, this has to be done taking care of all sanitary measures that they help us to be active co-responsible in the eradication of the pandemic ”.

Initially, phase 2 of the Footsteps plan only considered the reopening of non-essential businesses and quarantining on weekends. However, as the months went by, the possibility of opening restaurants, cafes, bars, gyms, cinemas, theaters and casinos was added, plus the possibility of conducting face-to-face classes.

For this reason, religious groups had expressed their annoyance when they saw that religious cults were not considered in the reopens of phase 2.

It is worth mentioning that this week the Government reported that during March you couldn’t open gyms and casinos, nor could it be events with publicThis is due to the sustained increase in infections in different areas of the country.
