Until 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, a total of 36,720 cars had left Santiago through the different highways, ahead of the National Holiday weekend, despite the existing travel restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to figures from the Ministry of Public Works, which gathers information on toll plaza transactions, there were 12,987 cars on Route 5 Sur; 3,601 on the Los Libertadores highway; 9,455 on Route 5 North; 8,334 through Route 68 (Santiago-Valparaíso), and 2,343 vehicles through Route 78 (Santiago-San Antonio).
The flows are obviously much lower compared to last year, when 550 thousand cars left the capital during the National Holidays (on September 17, 2019 there were 144 thousand). And if you look at more current data, for example, last Wednesday, there were 66,957 mobile phones moving.
The Minister of Public Works, Alfredo Moreno, explained that although there were lower flows than the previous year, there were still clogging at the sanitary control points.
“All the cars will be checked and the process is extremely slow,” Moreno said. He recalled that sanitary cords will be installed in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, Concepción and Temuco regions, where information will be requested such as the health passport (where the state of health is declared), the safe conduct for work considered essential or proving that you are going to a funeral or health check. In other words, the Step by Step Plan prevents a person from traveling to another region or second home, unless they have the necessary permission.
A route that had less traffic than expected was 5 Sur, where 12 thousand cars traveled.
Juan Pablo Chávez, manager of Ruta del Maipo, called for “people to plan their trips, because they will have to wait at the sanitary cordon near Angostura. In addition, they must carry all the documentation ”.
The regional ministerial secretary of Health of the Valparaíso Region, Francisco Álvarez, explained that in the last 10 days there have been audits of the use of the second home, which is prohibited. This is verified in the 35 sanitary control points.
He explained that in that period 14 thousand vehicles have been returned, as the drivers were traveling to their second home; They could not prove residence in the commune, or they did not have the documents required to make a trip.
After the audits, 700 summaries were opened to people who went to their second home, many of whom were controlled in the same homes or on public roads. The seremi said that there will also be inspection on the ground (they have 350 officials in the portfolio and another 150 municipal inspectors on commission).
