With a spectacular comeback, Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in three sets on Saturday to claim her second US Open title.

Osaka, 22, beat Azarenka, 31, 1-6, 6-3 and 6-3 in one hour and 53 minutes of play on the Arthur Ashe court, the main one in Flushing Meadows (New York), with the empty stands in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

With this victory Osaka adds his second US Open title, after 2018, and the third Grand Slam of his career While Azarenka was unable to complete her unexpected sporting renaissance in the first grand final she had played since 2013.

The clash was a generational duel between the two best players by far in these last three weeks of tennis in New York.

Osaka, number 9 of the WTA, and Azarenka (27) already had to meet in the final of the Premier tournament in Cincinnati (played in New York) on August 27, but the Japanese left previously due to physical discomfort.

The forecast for this Saturday was uncertain as although Osaka had won the two Grand Slam finals of his career (US Open 2018 and Australian Open 2019), Azarenka has also shown a very high level during the last three weeks in New York and arrived full of confidence after her victory with a comeback against Serena Williams in the semifinals.

On the court was one of the players with the best service on the circuit, Osaka, against one of the best in the return, Azarenka, who imposed her style in the first set preventing the Japanese from taking the initiative for the points.

Osaka began to feel insecure with her serve from the first game, in which the Belarusian got a ‘break’ that gave her confidence to go up to the net more than her rival.

Azarenka broke his serve again for a 4-1 lead, with Osaka dropping his racket to the ground.

The young player made visible efforts to contain her frustration after racking up 11 unforced errors at that point in the match.

Azarenka still got a new ‘break’ in the first game of the second heat but the Japanese began to shake her nerves and to be much more aggressive with her forehand and in her opponent’s service returns.

The strategy paid off for the Japanese with points of a demoralizing power for Azarenka, getting two ‘breaks’ to get 4-3 and then seal the set 6-3.

The third and final set started with the confidence installed on the side of the Japanese, who soon broke Azarenka’s service and placed 3-1 in the lead.

Osaka was able to overcome three break balls that the Belarusian had with 3-1. The Belarusian refused to throw in the towel and broke serve again to get closer to 4-3, but Osaka did the same in the next game and clinched the title with her serve.

With this triumph Osaka returns to emerge victorious at Flushing Meadows after the turbulent final she played in 2018 against Serena Williams.
