More than 86% for the Approval and the Constitutional Convention: the overwhelming support of Chileans abroad in a historic plebiscite

With overwhelming results in favor of the Approval of a New Constitution and the formula of the Constitutional Convention as a mechanism for its drafting, Chileans living abroad have spoken so far in this 2020 national plebiscite.

After 20 hours, the Servel released the preliminary results, with 33.3% of the total votes counted. With these data, the Approval reaches 86.59% (7674 votes) and the Rejection 13.41% (1188 votes). Meanwhile, the Constitutional Convention adds 86.11% (7453 votes) and the Mixed Convention 13.89% (1202 votes)

With enthusiasm, Chileans living abroad participated in large numbers in the constituent plebiscite, and since yesterday reports and videos began to arrive on how the voting day was developing in cities such as Wellington and Auckland in New Zealand, and Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, with high participation from our compatriots.

During this day the same level of interest was repeated in venues in Paris in France and London in England, where despite the rain hundreds of Chileans came to exercise the right to vote.

The process proceeded with total normality in this plebiscite, considered the most important vote in three decades to replace the current Magna Carta, inherited from the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship and what kind of body should draft the new text.

The only incident occurred in Madrid, where a heated discussion took place outside the Chilean consulate, where about three people began to express their annoyance at the display of a Mapuche flag in the place, demanding that it be removed, since according to them it is an advertising sign for the Approve option.

Although the Foreign Ministry expected to give a recount around 6:00 p.m., finally there was no spokesperson, and the official data will be borne by the president of the Board of Directors of the Servel Patricio Santamaría, who pointed out that “at 8:00 p.m. the results of the planet ”.

Until now, the information that is coming from abroad on the vote count indicates that the letters were already clearly marked in favor of Approval.

From the Chile Despertó Internacional Network, which has been active throughout the day on the five continents, they also shared the figures. In Australia, one of the countries with the most Chilean voters abroad, the preliminary result indicated that 1,139 voters (84.3%) have favored the option of a new Constitution, while 212 (15.7%) have chosen they leaned toward Rejection.

Meanwhile, at the only scrutinizing table in Japan, the Approval was imposed with 124 votes, while the Rejection only reached 16 votes. In France, the count showed that by 93.95% (1,414 voters) the Approve option prevailed over the Rejection, which obtained only 6.05% with 91 votes. In Barcelona, ​​the largest electoral center abroad, there was also an aplastant triumph of the Approve with 2,195 votes against 180 of the Rejection.

The other side of the coin was provided by the United Arab Emirates, where the Rejection option was imposed by 21 votes to 20.

For their part, in Canada and the United States, compatriots said they were present and in Mexico City even Mon Laferte was present with his vote.

In Argentina, where there is the largest electorate of Chileans abroad, they set up up to 13 voting points. According to consular sources, about 8,000 Chilean residents in Argentina are called to the polls, with the corresponding health protocols due to the covid-19 pandemic.

In the Buenos Aires voting center, the Immigration Museum located in the port of the capital, there were queues from the early hours of the morning to cast the vote and decide whether to approve or reject the proposal to change the Constitution, all under constant rain and a storm watch.

At the scene there were criticisms of Consul Alejandro Bravo, accusing him of not complying with the minimum protocols required by SERVEL, keeping attorneys, press correspondents and the general public in precarious conditions, and denying the use of health services.

Other localities in which Chileans could vote were San Carlos de Bariloche (Río Negro), Córdoba (center), Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires), Mendoza (west), Salta (north) and Trelew (Chubut).
