After the triumph of the Approval and the Constitutional Convention in the plebiscite, deputies of the Broad Front announced the presentation in Congress of a project for that October 25 is a national holiday.
Among the drivers to declare said date as the National Day of Democracy, is the deputy Vlado Mirosevic, who in conversation with Express PM gave details of the initiative.
“The reason is clear, October 25 is not only the plebiscite with the highest participation in Republican history, but it is also the great demonstration (…) And that it was a peaceful, very massive demonstration ”, he explained.
Mirosevic clarified that it’s not exactly a new holiday Instead, they propose to replace October 12 (Columbus Day) with October 25.
In his opinion, Columbus Day has no reason to celebrate.
Regarding the retractors, who argue that it is a date that divides, the deputy stressed that rather revitalized democracy.
Another argument against is that it would be counterproductive with the economic reactivation, to which he replied that it is ruled out because it is not that a new holiday is added, but that it is replaced with another, as specified above.
The Liberal Party militant affirmed that “Democracy in the world is under threat”, For this reason, in his opinion, it is important that the new generations have a day to reflect on democratic values, especially since there is no civic education in the country.
He also clarified that the projects can be discussed in parallel in Congress, therefore, the discussion on, for example, the exit plebiscite or the election of the constituents would not be diverted.
