In the conversation about the 2021 budget that takes place in Congress, the Minister of Culture Consuelo Valdés was asked about her expectations for her portfolio in the coming year.

“The pandemic and the social outbreak in October has hit the cultural sector very unexpectedly and severely”Valdés said in an interview with CNN Chile.

“This is a budget bill and Congress is the space where agreements and disagreements are raised, and that is where we are talking,” said the minister, adding that “It has to be the ambition of the State of Chile that hopefully we will reach a budget of 1 percent”.

When asked about the minimum investment in Culture (which will go from 0.4 percent to 0.3 percent next year), Valdés said that “1 percent”.

“We have to be very realistic, in the country we are in, the moments we are in. These resources do not belong to the Ministry or the State, they are resources of all Chileans. And a weight that is placed on Culture is because it is no longer placed in another program or need of the citizens of the country“, he sentenced.
