Minister Pérez’s new criticisms of Ximena Chong cause annoyance in prosecutors

It has not been an easy week for prosecutor Ximena Chong. After having received a letter with threats at her home from motorcyclists and that, days later, the PDI surprised a policeman in civilian clothes walking around her home, the persecutor in charge of the investigation in which Corporal Sebastián Zamora is accused of throwing a teenager over the Pío Nono bridge has been the subject of criticism from the political world: the first was by Iván Moreira. “When you do politics as a prosecutor, it is without crying politics and you expose yourself to this kind of thing. No one is going to applaud that there is a threat, but let’s not come to make the victims, ”said Senator UDI.

The last episode happened when in the context of a dialogue by Zoom with members of the Jaime Guzmán Foundation, the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez, said that “the episode that the national prosecutor has made known happened, that a prosecutor has been threatened. We reject it, whatever opinion we may have of that prosecutor, whatever discrepancy we have against that prosecutor ”.

His intervention did not stop there, because then he slipped criticism of Chong’s professional work: “We have told him, I personally have told him, that he lacks objectivity many times. But she is a person, a prosecutor, who must be respected and no one can threaten another in Chile. “

Although neither the Public Ministry nor the aforementioned prosecutor wanted to comment on the ministry’s statements when contacted by La Tercera, sources close to Chong admit that she was surprised by Pérez’s words. Mainly because – according to the same sources – the persecutor has never met with the Secretary of State, nor have they encountered public activities. “It must refer to its previous and public opinions regarding investigations by the prosecutor,” respond from the Prosecutor’s Office.

The opinion expressed by Víctor Pérez did not agree with the Association of Prosecutors either. Its president, Claudio Uribe, is emphatic: “I don’t understand why the Interior Minister has to go around disagreeing with the prosecutor. It is not their role to disagree with a public official who performs a function with which the Ministry of the Interior has no relationship. Even more serious it seems to me that he treats the prosecutor of little objective. It is clearly a gratuitous statement, full of prejudices and inappropriate for someone who holds such a high position ”.

This Sunday, in an interview with Channel 13, Minister Pérez also referred to the constitutional accusation that was filed against him and how the decision to keep the general director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas, in his position, could have influenced: General Rozas to save me from an accusation is blackmail ”, said the former UDI senator. “This is an opportunity because I am going to face it knowing that I have not committed any fault.”

According to the minister, one of the problems of the uniformed police is that in past governments they only increased their number, but did not bother to improve their preparation. And no one, he added, “was prepared to face the pandemic, just as we were not prepared to face the violence for which he started on October 18.”
