The Minister of the Interior, Victor PerezHe pointed to an “organized group” as responsible for the attack on police in the Contulmo area, in the Biobío Region.

The incident left three police officers and two community members injured, in addition to the two burned trucks.

From the Palacio de La Moneda, Pérez said that the four police officers – who according to the Government were in investigative work – “were brutally attacked” for which they had to flee the place and hide in a nearby hill.

“The attack was perpetrated by a very organized group of seven to eight people, this is yet to be verified, but very violent, well armed, which forced this group of officials (…) to have to protect themselves to avoid further damage, “he said.

The minister added that this type of attack “will try to inhibit the investigative actions of the Carabineros, but I am sure they will not succeed.”

According to preliminary information, the carabinieri staged an armed confrontation at the entrance to the Elicura Valley. The policemen moved in vehicles without institutional logos.

The general of the Eighth Carabineros Zone, Luis Humeres, stated that “personnel were carrying out procedures to determine some situations in coordination with the Prosecutor’s Office, in a place in Elicura, they were ambushed, blocking the way in the front and rear of the vehicles The personnel had to disembark, protect themselves and were violently attacked by more than 40 people. “

“There are shots, personnel made use of their fiscal weapon, in the air, to be able to leave the place, to avoid being more attacked,” he added.

There were two community members with injuries and three injured police officers, the latter said “they are the product of sticks and stones.”

Maderick Leviqueo, Werken from the Antonio Leviqueo community, came out to deny the Carabineros version, noting that there was no armed confrontation with the police officers.

According to his version, the incident occurred when a group from the community went fishing. On the way they came across a truck that had its patents covered.

The community members – who were unarmed – asked what they were doing there and the officials replied that they were looking for firewood, which led to a fight after which the four subjects identified themselves as Carabineros.

“I want deny what the Government is saying, here at no time was there an attack against them -carabineros- they came to attack us, “he said.

Leviqueo adding that “they arrived with the patents covered, they said they were not Carabineros who were doing other things, we began to review and we take out vests and everything inside -from the vans- that are not lying, if they were Carabineros they had to appear. They fired 7 shots. “
