The Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, referred this Wednesday to the scenario that is expected in Chile before a second wave of coronavirus. In the instance, the personero recommended not to vacation this summer in some regions of the south of the country due to the high circulation of covid-19.

Paris, when asked about a possible explosive increase in new cases in January, affirmed that “these are calculations, there is not 100% certainty. But you have to announce this because if you don’t they criticize you, if you do, they criticize you. I think it is better for people to be prepared and to know that if they are not careful we are going to have a second wave like in Europe, “he said on Radio Pauta.

In this sense, he added that what worries him most “is that the Metropolitan region has an increase of 10%”, explaining that a second wave is projected for mid-January. “Because the epidemiological curve shows that trend.”

Asked about the causes that would generate this outbreak of the virus in Chile, the head of the Minsal pointed out that “when mobility increases, but also people take off their mask to smoke, to talk on a cell phone and distance is not respected, of course it increases the possibility of being infected ”.

On the other hand, He said that for the solar eclipse on December 14, “a series of measures were set so that there is no massive entry of foreigners, or Chileans from other locations, to the eclipse zone.”

In the same vein, he assured that at this time of summer vacation “obviously in La Araucanía, the region of Los Lagos, Los Ríos, it is impossible for us to say, in this scenario, that we will have the possibility of doing tourism there” .

Paris said that in these areas of the country “they have to improve their rates”, for which “today I would not go on vacation to the south because the circulation (of the virus) is very high.”

The reactions

As a bucket of cold water, they qualified the expressions of Paris in the tourism industry. From the Federation of Tourism Companies of Chile (Fedetur) they responded that “having clear that the priority is people’s health, there is a roadmap designed by the Executive himself, that he is now ignoring by asking that people not travel, even to destinations that are in phase 3 or higher and where tourism can be carried out ”.

The president of Fedetur, Ricardo Margulis, said he did not understand the Executive’s position on this matter, considering that it was the current administration that designed and implemented a plan (Step by Step), where it was defined in which phases of that protocol the tourism, “and it turns out that now they are unaware of that roadmap and make a call not to go south, when there are many destinations in that area of the country that are in phase 3 or higher and to which it is allowed to go and do tourism.”

“As an industry we are very aware that people’s health is paramount, and that for this reason, the industry has adopted all the measures and protocols so that people have a safe tourist experience, but at the same time we ask that they respect the norms and measures that the authority itself has imposed on us, and that we as a sector have fully complied with in all aspects, from keeping ourselves closed where it is not possible to function, to the implementation of sanitary protocols for a safe opening ”, he said.

It also stated: “We have made a tremendous effort as an item to comply with the Executive’s provisions and we ask that the rules also be respected by those who dictate them.”

For his part, Deputy Gabriel Ascencio (DC) pointed out that Paris “puts a tombstone for tourism in the south of the country with his statements and I ask him for more wisdom in his sayings.”

Along these lines, he assured that “The words of the Minister of Health are not only contradictory, they are also a tombstone for tourism here in southern Chile, on the eve of a long holiday, and for that reason, I would like to know if the entire Government is condemning the tourism that takes place in the south of Chile in the way that the Minister of Health is doing ”.

“The minister must have a little more maturity, of good sense to say all these things and make the calls that he makes and with which he condemns us definitively and for that reason I am going to ask that the Economy Committee immediately summon the Undersecretary of Tourism so that he can say if he shares these statements and I am also going to ask that the health minister be invited to correct these unfortunate and incredibly absurd statements, “he said.
