The Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, was presented this Monday before the Investigative Commission on the actions of the Government regarding the pandemic in Chile.
In this instance, the president of the commission, Jaime Mulet (FRVS), asked him about publications that suggest that the virus has had a higher fatality in vulnerable communes.
“The truth is that the more poverty there is, the more possibility of contagion,” he admitted, “but no more possibility of fatality, or there is no relationship between fatality or poverty, because that would mean that patients are treated in a discriminatory way by their place of origin “, he assured.
“Since we installed the integrated Health network, that has not happened. Patients move from one place to another, from a public hospital to a clinic, from one region to another ”, the head of the portfolio stressed.
In this context, he pointed out against overcrowding: “There is a greater amount of contagion in the poorest communes or those with less socioeconomic development (…) Why? Because of the policies that recent governments have followed, in relation to 50mt2 apartments or 70mt2 houses are built and 8 people live, or they live in cités, or they live in multi-divided houses. In other words, this is a problem of the State of Chile, and one of the lessons that we also have to draw from this pandemic, and it is an ecological concept as well, in relation to how we have violated the dignity of people by making them live in homes inappropriate ”.
He also pointed to territorial inequality and stressed that “It is a responsibility of the State of Chile. Why are there more parks in one place and fewer parks in others? Why are there houses of 400mt2 in one place and in others of 60mt2 and without a patio? So obviously, in a small house with a single bathroom, with a small bedroom, sometimes with one and a half, the contagion capacity is much higher ”.
Therefore, he insisted that “that was what caused the virus explosion in Santiago. When the virus began in the upper area of Santiago, the contagion rate was very low, when it reached the western area, obviously that enormous amount of contagion that we could see occurred, but this is not the fault of the government in power – it it could have touched another government – this is a problem of the State of Chile, and we have to reflect very well on what the standards will be to build houses or buildings where people do not live in crowds “ sentenced.
