The debate on the minimum wage was postponed to this Wednesday in the Chamber of the Lower House, after the Executive opened up to the possibility of accepting some proposals, such as discussing the readjustment next March.

The Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, indicated that “it makes a lot of sense to evaluate the economic situation of employment in March”, so he opened up the possibility of advancing in this readjustment of zero percent real the CPI projected for March next year and to negotiate again on that date and not in mid-2021.

Because of this, a committee meeting was held and it was decided to give a few hours to open space for negotiations, so it will be voted on tomorrow.

If there is a new proposal by the Government, the debate will be reopened this Wednesday in the Sala, however, if there is no agreement and the initial proposal is maintained – which would specifically raise the salary by 1,500 pesos -, the vote will be held tomorrow, no discussion.

Like the independent deputy Pepe Auth (ex-PR), his partner DC Gabriel Silber called for a vote against of the Government’s proposal.

“We are going to request and we hope that the Executive will do the same as I hope not to vote strictly for this project today. There is a political window of opportunity, to talk and reach an agreement and, of course, if there is a window of opportunity to dialogue, the Christian Democrats will be available to that, because more than ever it is necessary to fence the shores, if it is that we want to build a bridge for dialogue in circumstances as dire as those the country is experiencing, “he explained.

In turn, the UDI deputy Patricio Melero He stressed that the postponement of the vote “has no other objective than to reach an agreement with the opposition and with the Government to bring projected inflation forward to March and be able to give a better readjustment this month and not wait until the new negotiation.”
