By 16 votes in favor and 25 against, the Senate Chamber rejected the indication of the Migration law regarding the “Temporary stay” of migrants “To search for job opportunities”, which gave foreign citizens a period of 90 days, after the law was approved, to regularize their situation.
The one called by official sectors as “work tourism visa” was proposed by the senator Juan Ignacio Latorre (RD) and approved by the Finance Commission, unleashing a strong communication campaign by the Government, which called on parliamentarians to reject such an indication.
According to La Moneda, the proposal produced a “pull effect”, which triggered a strong increase in irregular income from the northern border of the country.
The opposition parliamentarians who joined the ruling party in rejecting the indication were Jaime Quintana (PPD), Jorge Soria (PPD), Pedro Araya (Independent), Alejandro Guillier (Independent), Carolina Goic (DC) and Felipe Harboe (PPD).
In the debate in the room participated the undersecretary of the Interior, Juan Francisco Galli, who noted the urgency of passing the Migration law, but without the amendment that promotes a work tourism visa.
