The Minister of the Segegob, Jaime Bellolio, and the Minister of Transport, Gloria Hutt, confirmed that during the day of the Plebiscite, Tickets in the Santiago Metro, Merval and Biotrén will be free.

The measure would respond to the requests of mayors, parliamentarians and the community, but also of the different commands for the Approval, which for some time they requested free all public transport for October 25.

Earlier this Wednesday the head of Transport pointed out that there was very little time left and it required many resources to implement a measure like this.

However, the spokesperson said this afternoon that “at the request of the President is that a extraordinary budget allocation, also given the extraordinary nature of this Plebiscite “.

“In other words, a special effort is being made given the context of the pandemic in which we are, so that this Sunday we can have, in addition to the 2 thousand services that are free in isolated sectors, rural sectors and special services, plus the 50 percent discounted rate in all the country for older adults, that there is free for the Santiago, Merval and Biotrén Metro “, remarked Bellolio.

The minister insisted that the objective of this measure is that “we can have a Plebiscite on October 25 that is as participatory as possible“.

Meanwhile, Hutt explained that “we are going to deliver special instructions tomorrow, but a mode will be activated in which a zero fee is registered for the use of any of the services,” a public policy that has a cost of 1,100 million pesos for the state.

The Santiago-Rancagua section of the Central Train will also operate for free on the day of the Plebiscite, as confirmed after the announcement by the Ministry of Transport.

On the other hand, Metro de Santiago will extend its hours of operation this Sunday, starting at 7:00 am and ending at 9:00 pm; so will the Central Train, which will be available between 7:00 a.m. and 9:15 p.m. on the Nos section, and between 9:00 and 7:00 p.m. on the Rancagua section.

The Merval schedule will also be extended, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., and Biotrén, between 7:00 and 20:30, while to Coronel it will work between 6:15 and 19:30.

Opposition qualifies the ad as “centralist”

Despite the fact that the Plebiscite was then expected to take place in April, it should be remembered that in January the senators Yasna Provoste (DC) and Alejandro Navarro (Progressive Country) presented a bill to guarantee that public transport was free on election day.

Therefore, before the announcement, the spokeswoman for the Broad Front for Approval command, Beatriz Sanchez, affirmed that from his sector “we noticed it for months, we said it for months, and four days after the Plebiscite they improvise“.

The former presidential candidate assured that the measure is “a deeply centralist decision, leaving out 13 regions. What about all those Chilean men and women? Why some yes and others no?”.

For now, in other regions of the country there will be some free transportation in the cases of isolated and rural sectors, according to the Government.

From the officialism, the mayor of Providencia, Evelyn matthei (UDI), said that “Senator Marcela Sabat (RN) and I had asked the Government that on voting day all public transport be released, but a part of the population: older adults and pregnant women. What the Government did was different: it gave all the public the gratuity but in some means of transport. (…) It came out differently, but it is still a good step and we hope that many people will vote on Sunday. It is an important day for Chile, and using these means for free naturally helps. ”
