The mayor of Valparaíso, Jorge Sharp, met this day with the Comptroller General of the Republic, Jorge Bermúdez. The reason? Address the report that the supervisory body made to the municipality and that found a series of alleged irregularities in the use of school grants. Situation that led to the initiation of an account trial to recover $ 931 million.

This is how the communal chief, accompanied by his legal team, arrived at the headquarters of the Comptroller’s Office in Santiago to deliver a series of records and documents to Bermúdez in order to clarify the deficiencies detected.

“What we stated in the meeting with the controller is that we put ourselves completely at the disposal of the Comptroller’s Office to be able to address each and every one of the observations and changes that the institution requires us to make. We pointed out to him that we were going to do it in the full spirit of collaboration, ”said Sharp.

And he added that also, “in a short time, we are going to present different visions that allow us to improve the management of the technical high schools of Valparaíso. It was a good working meeting between two institutions, we made ourselves available and we will respond in the very brief deadline for each of the observations made by the Comptroller, in order to correct and resolve this irregularity that was observed ”.

Sharp was emphatic in pointing out that the monies claimed by the Comptroller’s Office were not lost, but rather were used in other things for which they were not intended.

“We have had to take care of a problem that has been brewing for many years. It was up to us to address it and we are going to do it with the speed, the responsibility it deserves, but here there is nothing to hide, here there is no money that was lost, in fact the report of the Comptroller’s Office is super clear. What were these resources spent on, particularly in the payment of salaries of officials who had been working for many years in these high schools and also in the purchase of some products so that the productive areas can function ”, he indicated.

The Comptroller’s investigation not only brought legal problems to Sharp, but also political problems. This is because from the Frente Amplio, a block through which the communal chief came to the municipality, they distanced themselves from him after hearing the news and questioned giving him their support before his re-election.

In parallel to Sharp’s efforts with Bermúdez, the DC bench asked the Comptroller’s Office -through an official letter- to carry out an investigation into the Buenos Aires municipality.

The head of the bench of the DC deputies, Daniel Verdessi pointed out that “it is necessary that a broad inspection, investigation, audit and pronouncement by the Comptroller be decidedly promoted on the actions and antecedents object of the aforementioned complaint, for all legal purposes to what place ”.

While the deputy chief of the Falangists in the Lower House, Gabriel Silber stated that “we want to know how the mayor’s administration has affected the municipality, in its various management areas and transferred services and its effects on the administration of the city, to determine eventual administrative and legal responsibilities that may arise ”.
