According to information from the health authority, Magallanes concentrates 70% of active cases of covid-19 in the country. The management of the pandemic in the area ended with the departure of Mayor José Fernández and now there is a supposed infection in the laboratories that test the virus.

To address the controversy and how they will face the emergency, the mayor of Punta Arenas, Claudio Radonich, assured in It could be worse who asked for one audit of the samples that the municipality has carried out to provide peace of mind to the population and asked that the situation be clarified as soon as possible.

The communal chief indicated that the indexes of the last 24 hours “Our region, where 0.9% of the population (of the country) lives, had more active cases than Santiago, where 40% live. We are talking about a figure that escapes all scales ”.

A failed strategy

In his opinion, the situation in the commune is a reflection that the “strategy failed due to many reasons, It should not be seen as something linear, what Punta Arenas is experiencing is a second wave that has not been experienced anywhere in Chile. We started in April with the first peak with a very hard quarantine ”.

He indicated that the strategy of lowering the mobility of the inhabitants did not work. “We have been quarantined for four weeks and mobility at its best was less than 17% and for a quarantine to be effective we are talking about 30% or 40% and despite the fact that a vehicle restriction was determined by the Government, even increased mobility ”.

Therefore calls on the authorities to give them more powers to act more actively in controlling the pandemic. They are also asking for PCR for the airport.

Radonich stressed that it is an isolated area, therefore, they have geographic elements to be more effective.

Among the aspects that have made it difficult to reduce infections, is that there are currently more businesses open than the first wave. “Many companies expanded their business in recent months (…) one understands the economic issue but the health situation is so strong that it requires an audit”, said.

Regarding the hospital, he affirmed that it is not collapsed and that the staff is very stressed, but it is the only highly complex in the region and they also see other types of accidents and illnesses.

Samples

“We as a municipality are testing in the street, not in companies, they are doing it with mutuals, and what I asked now to do an audit of the samples made by the municipality, which are 4 thousand, to give certainty that there is no problem “.

This, after Minister Paris affirmed this morning that there is a possibility that in Magallanes there are “false positives” of covid-19, which could be due to contamination in laboratories and would explain the rise in infections.

To close, the mayor asked that the above be clarified as soon as possible to give the population peace of mind.
