The mayor of the Coquimbo region, Lucia Pinto Ramirez, confirmed this Saturday that he presented his resignation from the position amid questions about the so-called case “Papaya Gate”.
What happened ?: on Thursday the Investigation Unit of Radio Bío Bío disclosed a land purchase process by the Coquimbo Intendancy that was rejected four times by the Comptroller General of the Republic.
However, the Intendancy finally registered a new contract in a La Serena notary’s office without going through the “reason” of the supervisory body, an unavoidable operation that is part of the process, so the Comptroller’s Office referred the case to the Prosecutor’s Office arguing irregularities .
The Regional Government of Coquimbo insisted that the procedure was carried out in accordance with the law.
The mayor, Lucía Pinto Ramírez, stated at that time that “Comptroller’s Office can put in antecedent any fact that in its opinion should be investigated, but we we have absolute certainty and all the antecedents, which prove that there is no type of irregularity ”.
Resignation
In the framework of this case, this Saturday Pinto Ramírez released a press release -signed by herself- confirming his “indeclinable” resignation in charge.
“In view of the events that have taken place in recent weeks, I have submitted my unwavering resignation from office to the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera “, he wrote.
He then explained that his decision was based “on the deep love I have for my region, which I have always served with dedication, commitment and loyalty.”
Pinto Ramírez added that leaving office will allow him dedicate “completely” to their defense.
“I don’t want the Coquimbo region and the government I have served to be affected in any way,” he added.
Finally, in the statement thanked Piñera’s trust and support.
